In 1832 he worked under the guidance of Amos Stewart, cabinetmaker and elder brother. For the next 50 years he applied his Shaker views to his extraordinary cabinet work so that today he is considered one of the foremost classical Shaker cabinetmakers of New Lebanon. His fundamental Shaker belief is embodied in the forms of furniture he created. This creed is nevermore so evident than in this exceptional work stand. Exhibited at the Whitney Museum, NY, and the Corcoran Gallery, Washington, DC; pictured in Shaker Design, J. Sprigg, pages 50-51; exhibited Nov. 1975 Women's Auxiliary of the United Cerebral Palsy Association of Greater Hartford, "The Shakers", No. 30, in the catalog; exhibited in 1997 "Making His Mark: The Work of Shaker Craftsman, Orren Haskins", page 26, Shaker Museum and Library, Old Chatham, NY; originally purchased from Ed and Celesteection).

On Sundays after church, my father and I would drive out to Hancock to visit the last remaining Shaker sisters who had moved to Hancock when the New Lebanon community finally closed.
